PERSONAL

1.     What schools did you attend and what did you major in?

I majored in communication science from Anahuac University in Mexico City, one of the leading universities in Mexico.  Its Communication School is ranked number one in the region.  After that, I obtained certification in marketing, finance and the pharmaceutical industry.

2.     Did you always know that you wanted to work in PR? If not, how did you become involved in the PR industry?

I was lucky enough to start working as an employee communications intern at Daiman Group.  I reported to the manager of public relations while I was still in school and that helped me decide for the last two years what subjects would fit best my career and thus my areas of specialization.  So I graduated in communication science with a focus on public relations.  After graduation, I worked in the public relations departments of various local and global companies.

3.     How do you enjoy your free time?

I travel as much as I can, and I have found that a couple of good books are great travel companions.  When I am in town I enjoy a lot the fantastic restaurants of Miami, I am a regular at Mandolin Aegean Bistro in the Design District and I also like the hole-in-the-wall places like Romeo’s, the best-kept secret!

4.     Are you involved with any other organizations that you find fulfilling?

I am a member of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which every year delivers the International EMMY Awards.  I am also part of the International Association of Business Communicators and I participate on a regular basis in the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and other local associations. Besides all of this, and on a personal basis, I am currently the President of Enlace Mexico, a NGO that is strengthening the Mexican community in Florida.

PROFESSIONAL

1.     What was your first job in the industry?

My first formal job was at American Express as communications specialist.

2.     What do you find to be the most exciting aspect of your current position?

That it is always changing, very dynamic. We have to work on several projects on a daily basis and in different countries.

3. What are your major challenges?

Usually it is in planning. The nature of our business makes it very challenging as all the plans can change from one day to the other and then you have to start all over from scratch.

4.     What is your proudest achievement in your professional career?

The satisfaction that every brand/company that I have worked for has become the leading one in terms of reputation, image, share of voice, etc. I am happy to have contributed to their business success.

5. Where do you see the PR industry in 5 years?

It's growing so fast, more and more companies realized the value of PR and it's very interesting to see that during the 2008 economic crisis, management would cut budgets on anything but PR.  That's a huge change that will hopefully continue into the future.

6.  What is your ultimate career goal?

To keep on learning.

7. Any advice for PRSSA members/emerging professionals?

Love what you do--that's the key to success.
