Navigating Ethics to Restore Trust
and Improve Personal and Business Success

A seminar on truth and trust in an era of “alternative facts”

PRSA Miami, in collaboration with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, invites public relations professionals and the business community to take part in an ethics discussion to analyze ways of dealing with misinformation and mistrust in the age of social media. Drawing on current and recent events, a panel of experts from business, law, the media and public relations will address the ever-evolving ethics of communication at a time of eroding trust in essential institutions and a proliferation of misinformation and deliberate falsehoods on current issues. The group will also address how strong ethics can improve personal and business success.

Members of the expert panel, which is part of the Public Relations Society of America's National Ethics focus, include:

Kety Esquivel, a multiple-award-winning senior vice president of Edelman Public Relations, will present the strategic communications firm’s 2017 Edelman Trust Barometer,a study revealing the largest-ever drop in trust across the institutions of government, business, media and NGOs. She has worked with top-tier agencies and clients in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Europe for more than 20 years. A Cornell University graduate, she is also a popular blogger.

Fred Blevens, Ph.D., professor in the Florida International University Department of Journalism and Media, is a leader in the emerging discipline of news literacy, empowering citizens facing a glut of digital input with tools to critically analyze information and shape opinion. He was a reporter and editor at newspapers in Philadelphia, Fort Worth, Houston, Tampa and San Antonio for 20 years. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Travis Winslow, vice president of Ethics and Compliance at Carnival Corporation & plc., structured the ethics and compliance program across the world’s largest cruise line. He joined Carnival in 2006 and oversees the program for brands in the U.S., United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Australia, China, and on 100+ ships worldwide. A graduate of the University of Oregon School of Law, he also was a special agent with the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Terence Shepherd, news director, WLRN News, is Region 13 director and Ethics Committee chair of the Radio Television Digital News Association.  He edited business and finance coverage at the Miami Herald for 14 years, was managing editor of a financial website and worked in the commodities brokerage business. He earned degrees at the University of Virginia and Florida Atlantic University and was a 2016 Fellow in the Next Generation leadership program.

Virgil Scudder, moderator of the panel discussion, is a communication expert and author who writes the In the C-Suite column for PRSA’s national magazine, Public Relations Strategist. He is the author of World Class Communication, named one of the top 25 business books of 2012. His career covers 26 countries and five continents, and earned many awards. A former New York broadcaster and executive at Hill & Knowlton and Carl Byoir & Associates, he graduated from Indiana University.
